New York Deli takeover by boar's head brand is not limited to NYC territory.

Jewish American's all over the country, have an ethnic food that will always be associated with new york deli food. While a bagel and lox sandwich with cream cheese, is also associated with Jewish American's and the NY Deli, this article is more about Meat than fish. With the NY Deli industry under attack, and the costs involved with keeping the deli open, the deli owners have turned to cost cutting measures to keeping the doors open. NYC at one time had over 1,000 kosher deli's. (some sources say there used to be over 4000) Now there are about two dozen or less.

While New Yorker's who write about the disappearance of their beloved deli's, they don't realize that the deli is not dead, and the issue is a takeover of much more than New York City.

Enter Boar's head brands, and the American takeover over the deli industry, not only in New York City, but the entire country. The most interesting part of the Boar's head takeover of American deli's, is that they did it while branding everything with a pig's head.

What you have here is a pig head logo, on the deli outside sign, then another pig head logo on the deli counter and another pig head logo on the cheese counter.

What this means to a non jew is brand recognition, but what this means to a jew is that you are breaking traditional kosher dietary laws, and you are not only mixing meat and milk, in violation of jewish dieatary laws, and that pork is served in this deli, and cut on the same deli slicing machine as turkey, chicken and what not, but the biggest thing that all this boar's head branding is to put jew's on notice, that you are being warned of your wrong doing, every time you eat at a non-kosher deli.

New York deli food is ethnic because at one time it was all kosher, and the customers were all jewish. Over time, many american  Jews slowly became less strict about their observance of jewish dietary laws, and jewish deli owners wanted to gain a larger audience. Maybe, these deli owners first decided they needed to be open on friday and saturday, so then came opening on shabbat, then came cheeses in the deli. Cheese was foreign to the deli of New York, because new york deli food was associated with MEAT. (Separating meats and cheeses is a jewish kosher dietary law, and also a rule for kosher restaurants.)

What foods were once found in a kosher deli?
Brisket, pastrami, kugel, matzo balls, beef tongue, liver, egg salad and gefilte fish, can be found there. As well as hoagies and hot sandwiches to order, without cheese, which under kosher law cannot be served with meat. This also means that coffee with non-dairy cream will be served.

Jews might have been tricked by "jewish style" or "kosher style" signs that seemed to make eating non-kosher ok. This trickery does not last long, but the damage is done.

Another disgusting aspect of the boar's head brand takeover is the product kosher dill pickles. Why would someone buy a kosher pickle with a pig head logo on the container? Its revolting and quite disgusting that someone could get away with doing it. I realize that the process involves kosher salt, and not kosher laws, but it is still disgusting and tasteless on their part.

I am thouroughly disgusted, and why I choose kosher new york deli's over a pig's head brand called boar's head.

Before I rant on, let me just say this: There is one deli brand responsible for making jews realise that they are not eating within the jewish dieatary laws.

While some jews rationalise that as long as they don't eat pork, they are ok to eat cheese on their sandwitches.

The one brand responsible for taking the blinders off of jews who eat in new york deli's is the brand with the pig's head logo. Boar's head brands not only is big in deli meats, they are also equally as big in cheese's sold at the deli counter.

There's a certificate on the wall at the deli's entrance that confirms it's been given the seal of approval by the Scranton Orthodox Rabbinate. Two local rabbis come in for regular inspections to make sure everything is, well, kosher.

Gentiles are only allowed behind the deli counter if Mr. Blatt or another observant Jew is present. Upon the deli's closing every night, a row of windows comes down and seals it off from the rest of the store, and no other store employee, including Mr. Riccardo, has access to it.


But for all my knowledge of Jewish delis, the roots of the foods served there remained a mystery to me. I'd learned that the word delicatessen derives from German and French and loosely translates as "delicious things to eat." And I knew that when they began appearing in New York and other North American cities in the 1870s, Jewish delicatessens were little more than bare-bones kosher butcher shops offering sausages and cured meats. But as the American Jewish experience evolved away from that of eastern Europe's, so did the Jewish delicatessen's menu. Its flavors assimilated, and it turned into an American sandwich shop with a greatest-hits collection of Yiddish home-style staples: chopped liver, knishes (see Recipe: Potato Knish), matzo ball soup.

Boardwalk Empire: Cowards who don't believe movies can influence.

Why do you think advertisers put their products in movies? (product placement) Because an actor who uses the product in a tv show or movie can influence the public to use the product, or think a certain way.

Think happy meals, cigarettes in movies, liquor, and cereals loaded with sugar. Hatred and racism also has an affect, and this is very real. There is no imaginary influence on people. Its on purpose , well thought out, and targeted to its audience.

To the coward who wrote anonymously in reply to my post on antisemitism and about a jew that refused to allow jesus into his life. Was that a reason to kill him?

Historically, this is an issue that refuses to go away, and many jews have died in real life because of it.

The words I chose, spoke of anti-semitism in boardwalk empire and a problem in the real world, but you only saw this as a drama, written fictionally, in contrast, I live through hatred on a daily basis, tied only to my religion. I wear a yarmulke (head covering) and identify myself as a jew. Just as a person is a different color and hated because its not the same as thiers.

You must not be a jew, and must not be black, because you have no apparent experiences of racism or antisemitism. My Hypersensitivity as a jew, is based on realities in my life, and the need to express that showing hatred, only because of different religious views, cannot be tolerated in film or TV.

You are a coward to not give your name, and identify your race and religion, so we can see the reason for your biased point of view of the arts that cross the line and perpetuate an ugly hatred.

You asked to be heard and that your views be seen, and they will be heard, because your stupidity and tilted mind set and defending of racist antisemites must be shown to the world, that your ignorance is typical of what still exists while survivors of the holocaust die, and people forget.

Even jews forget about who they are, and what it means to be jewish. This is not the case for me, because I am jewish and I will never forget that being jewish means people will always hate me. Like your hatred for me. You cannot simply discredit the truth, to support your views, and maintain neutrality. That is my defintion of ignorance and blind hatred.

Let it go, and I will still have reason to not trust you. History speaks the truth, and jews have not changed their love of the torah, their love of god and their love of all jews. I have no hatred for people, and only defend ourselves when they threaten our lives.

Thank god I live in America, free to practice my jewish religion, and not afraid to let people know I am a jew.

I have to post a comment about the article here. The author has written something that is alarmist and biased to such an extent that it begs for a rebuttal.

It is true that the Jewish character in question is murdered by a Gentile. Why? Quite obviously, if you actually watch the episode, this is because the Jewish character has done the following:

1. Murdered an extremely important criminal turned informant/witness in cold blood.

2. Taken money for this murder from the corrupt politician who is the Gentile's enemy.

3. In the process of murdering the witness has caused irreparable damage to the Gentile's (his boss's) thus-far successful career.

In addition the Gentile is under extreme stress at home in his marriage.

One character HAPPENS to be Jewish, the other HAPPENS to be Gentile. Jews are shown in both a negative and positive light throughout the first season. As are Gentiles, as are African Americans, as are Italian Americans, as are Irish Americans.

The portrayal of a Jewish character in fictional media as anything more than a saint, a martyr, and/or a victim is itself the expression of some courage, the writers should be applauded for DARING to realistically portray a Jew as human and fallible, dare we even say evil?

It is VERY far from anti-Semitism to show one character murdering another when the one being murdered has lied, killed for hire, and caused the murderer to take the fall for it, is it?

Really writer, your hypersensitivity is a textbook example of crying wolf on something which does not merit it in the least just because you DO NOT LIKE what the show has to say, i.e. Jews can be bad too (bad in a realistic way, not as some larger than life Rothstein legend who we all know is not an everyday sort of character).

Boardwalk Empire uses antisemitic undertones similar to mel gibson's passion of christ, and this is how HBO might also be gaining an interest and viewership for another mafia series. The show is written by the writers of the sopranos, but for some reason, the writers wrote controversial anti semitic story lines in the same way that passion of christ gained notiriety, which in turn helped it gross millions for mel gibson. 

Is this a plan by HBO to follow in the same footsteps as mel gibson, or just a public relations trick?

Loose historical similarities

Boardwalk Empire seems to be continuing with a mel gibson level of antisemitic hatred, while keeping loosely to historical story lines, as they follow mobs of the early 1900's, except this time mark wahlberg and Martin Scorsese are taking the place of mel gibson.

While Martin Scorsese only directed 1, his name is associated as executive producing

Boardwalk Empire is supposed to be a loose version of a rewriting history, but why be so accurate for jewish hatred?

The core of the problem is as real today as it was in early american history. Spreading the lies of anti semitism is now saved for the affluent HBO subscribers.

What are the lies I am talking about? That jews don't believe in heaven. Jews DO believe in heaven. That Jews don't believe in jesus or follow any of his teachings. This is true, but are these reasons for hatred and for killing jews, even though these themes still exist in modern america.

Michael Shannon

In Boardwalk Empire a crazy prohibition agent (played by Michael Shanon), that beats himself, has extra marital affairs, steals mail from the post office, drinks alcohol during prohibition, decides to kill a jew because he does not have the same beliefs as christians. He kills the jewish man in front of witnesses during a baptism, for not converting.

The problem with this scene, is blatant anti semitism, but the real problem is that jews still hold the same beliefs, which may put them in danger with overzealous christians who may copycat the killing of non believers. (Its a difference of religious freedoms that is what this country was built on) if you asked a jew, the same questions as in Boardwalk Empire you would no doubt get the same response from a jewish person.

Does that make jews evil, because they won't convert? NO, JEWS ARE NOT EVIL!

In an interview in NY magazine, Michael Shannon, the actor who plays the anti-semite Van Alden, gives a twisted opinion in his own description of what happened to Erik Weiner's Jewish character Agent Sebso: (aka Damage control for to much anti-semitism in TV, by belittling the man and not the religion)

So let’s talk about the two really surprising things that Van Alden has done in the last two episodes. On last night’s episode, he drowned Agent Sebso (Erik Weiner). Tell me about that.
I don’t think he wanted to kill him, I just think he wanted to baptize him. The kid, he wouldn’t say yes and, you know, Van Alden’s a very angry person and I think when he drowns Sebso, he’s drowning everybody. He’s drowning Nucky, he’s drowning this whole situation. Because I think he resents the fact that he’s been put in the middle of so much sin and depravity. I think Van Alden really wants to be a good person, but there’s a lot of resentment and frustration built up inside of him because he can’t — it’s impossible. In this environment, he can’t maintain his character and his ideals. And so he’s disgusted with himself as much as anybody else … I think the word is he snapped.

Sebso’s not a particularly upstanding gentleman, but he dies because he refuses to convert, which takes some spine.
Sebso’s a little creep (Erik Weiner). He shot the witness. He’s not a good person. Sebso’s an asshole. I mean, I’m not saying he deserved to die, but he’s not an example of a great guy.

Who the hell does Michael Shannon think he is? Does he think he is the judge of heaven and who gets in, and who he must kill? There is a point in which Michael must stop playing a role, and come out and say this is wrong, but it seems like Michael Shannon wants to stay in his role, only when answering this question about Jews not wanting to convert. His opinions are best left to himself.

This is unacceptable in modern TV, and even for a pay subscription to HBO, this does not make it right.

Should this episode be edited to be less hateful toward the jewish religion? The question is, should this episode have ever been made? The answer is no, it should have had some self control on this type of issue.

While in earlier episodes, Jews held prominent roles as heads of mobs in NY, and were friends of the mob in Chicago, even recommending al capone stop wearing a hat for children, and he listens.

While you can tell that this prohibition agent has only a short time left to live, and he needs to create more hatred as the shows biggest villain, and we ultimately know that prohibition comes to an end, was the killing of a jew in a religious context necessary.

Maybe mark wahlberg and Martin Scorsese left the scene in, to create controversy and to gain PR for the show?  Regardless of their reasons for keeping the scene, it is still wrong.

Should we be happy or sad about Natasha Richardson the daughter of Vanessa Redgrave?

Just heard the news about Natasha Richardson, the daughter of vanessa redgrave and her skiing traumatic brain injury. She was rushed to Mont Tremblant and was taken to Centre Hospitalier Laurentien.



The first thought going through my mind was not about liam, her husband, but her mother and her support of palestinans and hatred for zionism. Much after vanessa started her plight in support of palestinians, I later went into public relations, and learned the art of spinning the truth and the knowledge that whomever has the ear of the media, owns the public opinion. Knowing this about PR and spinning a story in favor to whomever has the ear of the media, I decided to do a little research into what exactly did vanessa redgrave do and say to upset jewish people, and what did she not do? I figured that this would help me to decide how I felt about her daughter in fighting for her life in the hospital. (I don't wish harm on anyone, and I wish Natasha Richardson a speedily recovery)

What I first surmized after studying the words of vanessa redgrave was that because of public opinion, vanessa might have softened her stance. As I was digging deeper, I learned that vanessa redgrave was stubborn and would do things only in her way, and beyond reproach, regardless of public opinion.

While she may support palestinians she also fought against anti-semitism, or at least she said that after winning her oscar, and repeated it in the media for over 40 years? Can she really have it both ways, when the truth to the palestinan cause is to wipe out all jews in israel and to take over the entire country? my answer is, vanessa redgrave cannot have it both ways, and that by her supporting terrorism against jews and the only democracy in the middle east, she is stating that she is an anti-semite. As an actress, vanessa played holocaust victims, so I thought she may have learned some tolerance for jewish people and their homeland. It appears now, that the controversy she caused by playing a jew, but in reality a jew hater was that it was very good for obtaining press. It kept her name in the press for almost 40 years, didn't it?

In 1986 she garnered the London Drama Critics' Most Promising Newcomer Award for her performance as Nina in "The Seagull", with Vanessa Redgrave and Jonathan Pryce. In 1987 she played Tracey Lord in Richard Eyre's musical "High Society". She performed the title role of "Anna Christie", first in London, where she was voted London Drama Critics' Best Actress Award in 1992, then on Broadway at the Roundabout in 1993, where she was nominated for a Tony for Best Actress in a Play, a Theatre World Award for Outstanding Debut, the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Debut of an Actress, and a Drama Desk nomination for Best Actress. For her performance as Sally Bowles in Sam Mendes' production of "Cabaret", she won the 1998 Tony, Outer Critics Circle, Drama League and Drama Desk Awards for Best Actress in a Musical. She then appeared on Broadway in Patrick Marber's Tony-nominated play "Closer". This December she will play "Miss Julie" on Broadway with Philip Seymour Hoffman, directed by David Leveaux for Roundabout Theatre.

Richardson's television credits include Henrik Ibsen's "Ghosts" for the BBC, also starring Judi Dench, Michael Gambon and Kenneth Branagh; the HBO cable feature Hostages (1993) (TV); the BBC film Suddenly, Last Summer (1993) (TV), based on the play by Tennessee Williams, and also starring Maggie Smith and Rob Lowe. In 1993 she starred as Zelda Fitzgerald in the TNT movie Zelda (1993) (TV), co-starring Timothy Hutton and directed by Pat O'Connor (cable Ace nomination for Best Actress). She played Ruth Gruber in the 2001 CBS mini-series Haven (2001) (TV) based on Ms. Gruber's autobiography.

In early March, I started to see message boards talking about her death. I was in disbelief. I called her promoter and her webmaster and within the hour, her mother called and told me it was true. They were with her in the hospital, and they kept thinking that Shira would be coming home soon. She had died of a brain tumor at 25.

I decided to concentrate on helping Shira make some money so she could leave her past behind, and start on her future with independence. She was banking on her website to make her some much needed income. I concentrated on bringing visitors to her site. I asked for nothing in return, and was never compensated, nor did I want anything in return for bringing her paying members. Shira’s happiness meant more to me than anything.

Sexy, beautiful and dead part 3 (she had a membership on Jdate)

It was only natural for me to think of her as possible marriage material, especially being Jewish. She told me about her time on Jdate, looking for a Jewish man. When she was honest and sincere, men were put off by her past. They could not look beyond it. For me, I never seemed to get past my photos on Jdate. For her, it was her history and people could not see a bright future with her in it, like I could. If it was not for my long distance from Shira, I am sure I would have been part of her life even more.
